Along with me; many of my friends and family attended an African American College; better known as HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges & Universities), including both of my grand parents. I initially attended Winston Salem State University, and later after a stent in the US Army, attended, and graduated from Saint Augustine's University (1982), in Raleigh NC. Ironically, my roots go a bit deeper than just a Bachelor's Degree from Saint Augustine's; I was born on the campus; at the only hospital (Saint Agnes) available for African Americans during that period, in the Raleigh area.
Being an avid outdoorsman, hiker, camper, organic gardener, and amateur nature and landscape photographer; I have been inspired to present to alumni, students, faculty, friends, and supporters of these storied institutions; beautiful and colorful archival landscape images. Some of the buildings and landscapes that remain at these institutions are the result of perserverance and diligence of skilled craftsman, brick masons, carpenters, and community leaders; as well as students, and faculty, who attended and taught at these schools respectively. Many of the stone buildings were build with rock, quarried on the campus or with brick made by hand.
It is truly essential that we never forget the importance of these institutions and their significance to the African American culture. It is my hope that the images on this site will remind us of the hard work and sacrifices of our forefathers and their supporters, who under extremely difficult circumstances, accomplished the amazing feat of providing opportunities for higher education on these beautiful and historic campuses.
